Wegener’s Disease

Wegener’s granulomatosis is an uncommon disease and a multisystem disease that involves inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis). Broadly speaking or in layman’s language the disease mainly occur when the antibodies or the red blood cells in the body do not fight the diseases or the outside elements entering the body instead fight among themselves and multiply to a number that exceeds the required quantity in the body. This can be termed as an overactive immune system. However, the exact cause of this disease is not known but is said to be an autoimmune disease.

Wegener’s being a multisystem disease primarily involves the upper and the lower respiratory tracts (ears, nose, throat and lungs) and kidneys. The other parts of the body that may get involved are the eyes, joints and muscles, nervous system, skin, heart and others.

The symptoms of Wegener’s granulomatosis includes sinus inflammation, bloody sputum, joint pains, fatigue, constant low grade fever, weight loss, etc. The treatment of this disease basically involves stopping the inflammation of blood vessels by suppressing the immune system and plasmapheresis.
