Organ Donation in India

India is a large country with a huge population of 1.2 billion! In spite of this, hundreds die every year without getting an organ transplant. Reasons: the long waiting list, shortage of organs and lack of awareness.

Early loss of a precious life can be prevented if people are made aware that a loved one can be saved. The number of people needing a transplant is steadily rising due to medical advancement contributing to an aging population and lifestyle changes causing an increase in organ failure.

Even though a large number of people in India die due to road accidents only a few are able to donate their organs. Family’s support in this is paramount so that the organs are transplanted at the earliest as they have a very short life span.

Major Organs that can be donated are kidneys, lungs, liver, heart, skin, eyes, bone marrow, pancreas, connective tissues etc.

The founder of SKA foundation was not the only person saved by the cadaver donor but a few others too, as his family donated all his organs after his death.

Organ donation can be done 2 ways:

  • Cadaver donor: An individual can donate all organs after being declared brain dead with no chances of being resurrected.
  • Healthy family members: Parents, brothers, sisters and children can donate certain organs like, kidney and parts of liver and pancreas.
  • By pledging to donate organs during ones lifetime, everyone can help save a life and many times a few!

Role of Hospitals:

  • Hospitals play a vital role and every medical institution should spread awareness, the doctors can play a role too by explaining the complicated medical procedures involved
  • Help solve the misconception and help families understand that brain dead patients can donate organs as well.

In India the Main Reasons for shortage of Organ donors are:

  • Incomprehension and lack of education and understanding about Organ Donation
  • Information once received is not being shared with family members
  • After making up one’s mind for organ donation, failing to register with any one of the organ donation organizations in India.
  • Misconceptions about donating organs caused by Religious beliefs and traditions discourage people.
